The Road Transport Management System (RTMS) and Insurance

What is RTMS?

The Road Transport Management System or RTMS is a set of standards that promote safety and sustainability on South Africa’s roads. It is voluntary, self-regulated and supported by our government.

The main aim of this system is to encourage road transport operators to implement standards that demonstrate that they comply with the Road Traffic Regulations which in turn improves road safety, increases productivity, and preserves road infrastructure.

If a bus operator gets RTMS certified, it contributes significantly to its compliance, safety, performance, and efficiency.

Whilst RTMS focuses on reducing traffic violations, as well as fostering skills development in the transport sector, and promoting driver behaviour and wellness, it also encompasses vehicle maintenance, overloading, and road conditions.

Manage your risk and save

The benefits of maintaining your vehicles and taking care of your drivers’ wellness are that it reduces the number of accidents on our roads. Preventative maintenance may also decrease operating costs leading to significant savings. For example, companies that have implemented RTMS have seen a reduction in fuel consumption because of the hands-on approach.

RTMS and future contracts

When awarding contracts to top operators, the comprehensive internal protocols of RTMS make it easier to have faith in the operator’s business and operations.

RTMS grabs the attention of your insurers

The reasons for insurance underwriting agencies like ourselves to endorse the RTMS are obvious:

1) It has a favourable impact on a bus operator’s risk profile and a positive ripple effect on road safety.

2) If the system is implemented successfully, it eliminates most reasons to reject claims.

3) It enables us to offer the operator more favourable policy terms as it speaks to the very heart of proper risk management.

When you apply for insurance or when your current contract is up for renewal, your broker will enquire about your RTMS status and request proof thereof to qualify for more favourable terms.

How to start the process?

The RTMS certification is valid for three years, subject to an annual surveillance audit.
